Horizontal vs Vertical Scaling on Cloud Platforms

Scaling comes in two directions, and choosing the wrong one at the wrong time is a classic infrastructure mistake. The distinction is simple, but the operational consequences are not.

Vertical scaling makes one machine bigger; horizontal scaling adds more machines. Most modern workloads scale out rather than up, because that is where resilience and cost control actually live.

• Horizontal scaling spreads load and risk across nodes
• Stateless apps scale horizontally with ease
• Databases often scale vertically before they can shard

Design stateless services to scale horizontally from day one, and reserve vertical scaling for stateful components.
