VPS Backups and Snapshots: A Practical Guide

Backups are the most procrastinated part of running a VPS, right up until the day they are the only thing standing between you and data loss. Setting them up early is cheap insurance.
Snapshots capture the full state of the server at a moment, while backups are the ongoing safety net. Both matter, but they serve different recovery scenarios.
- Schedule automated snapshots at least daily
- Store backups off-site from the primary server
- Test restores before you actually need them
- Retain multiple recovery points, not just the latest
Run a restore drill once, because a backup you have never tested is a hope, not a plan. The time to discover a broken backup is not the day your server dies.
